The Story Behind the Mission

Sharkapalooza didn’t start as an event — it started as a lifelong calling.

Founder Jessica Adanich grew up in Ohio, far from the ocean, but deeply connected to it. As a child, she was fascinated by marine life and sharks, drawn to their power, mystery, and misunderstood nature. That passion followed her into adulthood, even as her path took unexpected turns — from studying automotive design to ultimately realizing that art could be more than creativity; it could be a catalyst for change.

In 2008, Jessica created a simple but powerful “Stop Shark Finning” graphic to raise awareness about one of the most devastating threats facing sharks. Nearly 20 years later, that artwork has been shared and used globally — helping spark conversations, influence education, and support conservation efforts around the world. It became proof that a single piece of art could move people, shape dialogue, and inspire action.

That is when Fuzzy Sharks was born — an immersive exhibit that reimagined sharks as soft, fur-covered, tactile forms suspended in space. Inspired by the scientific concept of biophilia — the innate human attraction to living systems — the installation challenged viewers to physically engage with sharks in a way they never had before. Instead of sharp teeth and fear, visitors encountered softness. Instead of distance, they experienced proximity.

Knowing she wanted to do more, Jessica moved to Tampa to be closer to the ocean and the conservation community she felt called to serve. That decision planted the seed for what would eventually become Sharkapalooza — a nonprofit, art-driven ocean festival built on the belief that conservation doesn’t have to feel distant or academic to matter.

Today, Sharkapalooza brings together artists, educators, scientists, families, and ocean lovers to celebrate creativity, build community, and protect what we love. At its core, it’s not just a festival — it’s the culmination of a personal journey fueled by purpose, passion, and the belief that art can change the world.

This isn’t just another event. It’s a story of heart, persistence, and creativity that creates real impact — one conversation, one connection, and one ripple at a time.
